Lucy’s Story…
For day 3 of World Breastfeeding Week the lovely @me_maeve_and_life has shared her breastfeeding journey and her experience with obstacles such as allergies and tongue tie. All words are her own:
“Our breastfeeding journey started in my pregnancy. From the day I found out I was pregnant, I knew I wanted to breastfeed. With my mum as a midwife and my aunt as a breastfeeding consultant, I'm extremely lucky to have that extra support around me and a head start into a successful breastfeeding journey.
At 38 weeks pregnant, I started harvesting colostrum. In total I got over 50mls in 1.5 weeks.
Once Maeve was born, she latched straight away. It was magical. A feeling I will never forget. Due to having a C-section, I stayed in hospital over night. I had no support with feeding and was left to it.
By week 2, I was in agony. My nipples were cracked and bleeding. Maeve was feeding nonstop. I decided to have her assessed for a tongue tie, which she did have. We had Maeve's tongue tie snipped at 3 weeks old. That first feed, that first correct latch changed everything. It was comfortable and I sobbed. I knew we could continue our journey.
At 6 weeks old, something wasn't right. Every feed was stressful. Maeve would projectile vomit, scream in pain, covered head to toe in an angry, horrific rash. My aunt came round and suggested it could be CMPA. That second she explained it, was the last time I consumed dairy. As soon as the dairy and soya was out of my system, Maeve was like a whole different baby. 15 months on, we're still breastfeeding on demand and discovered Maeve is allergic to 7 different things. It hasn't been an easy journey, but it's our journey.
It's our story.”
