DIY Breastmilk Jewellery vs Buying From a Specialist: Which Is Right for You?

There’s something incredibly special about breastmilk jewellery.

You take something that was such a huge part of your breastfeeding journey, something that nourished your baby, got you through the night feeds, the cluster feeding, the difficult days and the beautiful ones and turn it into something you can keep forever.

So, naturally, you might find yourself wondering:

"Could I make breastmilk jewellery myself?”

The short answer is: yes, there are DIY breastmilk jewellery kits available, and for some people, making their own keepsake can be a lovely project. It's also where I started out so I absolutely understand the appeal. I also understand that is harder than it looks to get a result which will stand the test of time!

So there is another option: sending your precious breastmilk to a specialist who has spent years learning, practising and perfecting the process and their craft.

And when you're working with something that can't simply be replaced, there are a few things worth considering before you decide.

What actually goes into making breastmilk jewellery?

Breastmilk jewellery isn't simply a case of putting some milk into resin and waiting for it to set.

The milk needs to be carefully preserved before it can become a breastmilk stone. The aim is to create a stable, beautiful material that can then be incorporated into a piece of jewellery.

At Boobie Jewels, your breastmilk is professionally preserved and transformed into a smooth, solid stone before being set into your chosen piece. Only a small amount of milk is needed — no more than 5ml.

The preservation stage is arguably the heart of the whole process and where getting it absolutely right matters most.

Once your milk has been used, you can't simply go back and get another batch from that particular moment in your breastfeeding journey, and once it is in jewellery there's no getting it back.

That's why experience matters.

DIY breastmilk jewellery: what's the appeal?

Let's start with the positives.

DIY can be tempting for lots of reasons.

You get to be involved in the process from beginning to end, you can experiment with your own design and, potentially, you can make something at home for less money than a professionally made piece.

There can be something really lovely about saying:

“I made this myself.”

If you're a crafty person and enjoy experimenting, it may be an appealing project.

But it's worth remembering that you're not just making a normal resin craft.

You're working with a biological material that needs to be properly prepared and preserved before it can become a long-lasting keepsake.

And that's where things can get a little more complicated.

The biggest consideration: your breastmilk is irreplaceable

This is probably the biggest thing I'd encourage you to think about.

If you make a mistake with a craft project, you can usually buy another piece of material and try again.

With breastmilk jewellery, the material you're working with is your milk.

Perhaps it's the last few millilitres you pumped before you stopped breastfeeding.

Perhaps it's milk from your baby's first weeks.

Perhaps it's milk you've kept in the freezer for years because you couldn't quite bring yourself to part with it.

Whatever the story behind it, that milk represents a moment in time that you can't recreate.

That doesn't mean DIY is automatically a bad idea.

It simply means that it's worth understanding exactly what you're taking on before you start.

Why experience makes a difference

At Boobie Jewels, breastmilk jewellery isn't something that's been added to a list of crafts.

It's the speciality.

I started Boobie Jewels in 2021 after wanting to commemorate my own breastfeeding journey with a piece of jewellery that genuinely showcased the beauty of the breastmilk. Years later, I continues to specialise specifically in breastmilk jewellery, working from my purpose-built studio in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. I have spent years refining and perfecting my processes, testing materials, preservations and ensuring that the keepsakes I make will stand the test of time.

That experience also means the process has been repeated again and again.

Different milks.

Different ages.

Different consistencies.

Different jewellery designs.

Different customer stories.

And, importantly, the same understanding that every tiny tube of milk arriving through the letterbox belongs to someone who has trusted you with something incredibly sentimental.

That's a responsibility I don't take lightly.

It's not just about the finished jewellery

When you buy from a specialist, you're not simply paying for a piece of jewellery.

You're also paying for the knowledge behind the process.

You're paying someone to handle your milk carefully.

You're paying for someone who understands the preservation process.

You're paying for the experience of knowing what to look for and how to create the best possible breastmilk stone.

And you're getting someone to turn that stone into an actual piece of jewellery — rather than having to learn the entire process yourself.

At Boobie Jewels, the process starts with your order and a breastmilk collection kit. You send your milk back, and the rest of the process is taken care of before your finished jewellery is lovingly sent home to you.

For many mums, there's something reassuring about being able to hand over that responsibility.

What about the cost?

There's no getting around the fact that DIY can look cheaper at first glance.

A DIY kit may cost considerably less than a professionally made piece of jewellery.

But I'd encourage you to think about what you're comparing.

You're not simply comparing two pieces of jewellery.

You're comparing:

DIY:

Materials + your time + learning the process + the responsibility for preserving your milk + making the jewellery yourself.

Specialist:

Expertise + preservation + materials + jewellery + years of experience + the time spent creating your finished keepsake.

And then there's the thing that can't really be given a price:

What happens if something goes wrong?

With a DIY project, that's your responsibility.

With a specialist, you're trusting someone who has made this their craft.

What if I don't feel confident doing it myself?

That's completely understandable.

Breastmilk jewellery can feel surprisingly daunting when you realise that the little tube of milk you've carefully saved is the only material you'll have.

You might find yourself worrying:

What if I preserve it incorrectly?

What if it discolours?

What if I use too much?

What if I ruin it?

What if I don't like how my finished piece looks?

Those are perfectly reasonable questions.

And honestly, if you're already feeling nervous about the process, that's probably a good indication that having an experienced specialist do it for you could give you much more peace of mind.

Your breastfeeding journey deserves to be celebrated

Something I love about breastmilk jewellery is that there isn't one “right” breastfeeding journey.

Maybe you breastfed for three years.

Maybe you breastfed for three months.

Maybe you exclusively pumped.

Maybe breastfeeding was incredibly easy for you.

Maybe it was one of the hardest things you've ever done.

Maybe you combination fed.

Maybe your journey ended sooner than you'd planned.

It all counts.

Breastmilk jewellery isn't about how long you fed for or whether your journey looked like anybody else's.

It's about preserving a piece of your story.

And that's why I believe the process of creating your jewellery should be treated with just as much care as the story behind it.

So, DIY or specialist?

Ultimately, it's completely your choice.

If you love crafting, enjoy learning new processes and understand the risks involved, a DIY project may be something you really enjoy.

But if your breastmilk is precious and irreplaceable and you want the reassurance that comes from handing it over to someone who has spent years specialising in breastmilk jewellery, then choosing a specialist can give you that extra peace of mind.

At Boobie Jewels, breastmilk is the star of the show. Always. Without compromise.

There are no unnecessary embellishments or added colours. Just your natural breastmilk, carefully preserved and transformed into a simple, beautiful keepsake designed to help you remember this chapter of motherhood for years to come.

Because one day, the feeds will be a memory.

The tiny baby will be a much bigger child.

And you'll be very glad you kept something that takes you right back to those moments.

*our milk. Your journey. Your story.

And something beautiful to remember it by.
